如何以高效、有效且安全的冷卻系統消除服務器散發的廢熱，在數據中心基礎設施設計過程中越來越引起人們的關注。多數數據中心設施都采用大型空調系統和大量的循環空氣消除廢熱。但是以制冷空氣冷卻服務器的方法成本高、效率低。很多時候，電費是數據中心的大運行開支。此外，計算機服務器運行更快，數據中心機架密度更高，想通過氣流實現有效冷卻變得不太現實。

因此，服務器制造商們轉而采用液體冷卻系統，試圖以更高效的方式消除熱量。這一理念其實并不新奇。早在20世紀60年代中期，第一臺超級計算機就已經采用液體冷卻防止設備發生自毀。隨著計算機向著更高效的方向發展，并且所產生的廢熱越來越少，空氣冷卻開始變得實用起來。然而，當今的微型處理芯片體積越來越小、功能達到了前所未有的強大，但與此同時所產生的熱量也越來越多。隨著CPU時鐘頻率和機架功率密度的提高，制造商們又再次選擇以液體冷卻方式消除余熱。另外，水性循環液體的去熱效率比氣流高30倍，因此采用液體冷卻能夠大大降低運行成本。盡管液體冷卻的技術仍然在發展，如今的液體冷卻應用正經歷逐步調整，以適應數據中心運行的需要，并且逐步模塊化，以便于進行維護，實現和空氣冷卻系統一樣簡便，并防止在服務器更換時產生滴漏、泄漏或溢出。
